Preparing for the Season

Preparation & Luck, Amundsen, & Ocean Tramp

Its all about the Planning

In his Description of the his South Pole Endeavor, Roald Amundsen made a comment about the link between preparation and luck…

I may say that this is the greatest factor — the way in which the expedition is equipped — the way in which every difficulty is foreseen, and precautions taken for meeting or avoiding it. Victory awaits him who has everything in order — luck, people call it. Defeat is certain for him who has neglected to take the necessary precautions in time; this is called bad luck.

We try to tackle our season in the same way – lots of preparation, so that when there is an opportunity we can grab it – an amazing morning spent watching whales, a fantastic evening watching the high polar sunset cast warm hues across the icy landscape.  And if our guests say how luck they are – then we’ve done our job in preparing the boats, the team, the season, so that everyone can enjoy the small moments in Antarctica.

The last months and in particular the last few weeks the team has been HARD at work PREPARING for the season.  Below are a few snapshots of some of the ways we prepare for the season.

Reviewing Charts, Anchorages, ice conditions for the Season:

Test Sails, Emergency Drills, Working as a Team

Lots of Food Shopping

Relaxing and Having some Fun (and good Argentine BBQ / Asado)
