Gear Our Passengers Loved

Gear Our Passengers Loved

Some of the Best Gear We Saw This Season

Having the correct gear and clothing in Antarctica can make a trip just that much more enjoyable.  We put together a gear list that works quite well when followed.  We mention general types of clothing to bring, but not specific brands.  However, we thought we would put together a collection of gear from our personal experience and our passengers of specific gear that worked very well in Antarctica and on Ocean Tramp – Enjoy!

Indoor Shoes

We have a no outdoor shoes policy onboard, but since its cold, one needs indoor shoes.  We often recommend crocs, as they are easy to get on and off and are fairly common.  This year some of our passengers came their own indoor shoes that they felt were PERFECT for the Antarctic environment.

The North Face Thermoball Traction Mule IV Hiking Boots – Men’s

One couple brought these insulated North Face slippers and were super happy they did!  We were all jealous looking at their toasty feed!

Camper Women’s Wabi 20889 Slipper

Passengers also used and loved these slippers during the season – warm and with good grip!

Perfect Versatile Dry Sack

Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Dry Day Pack (Black, 22-Liter)

Going ashore you don’t need much, but having a dry sack that is also a back pack to put your camera, some extra gloves, and a water bottle.  and when not in use – it packs up to nearly nothing!

Best all around Camera

Olympus TG-5 Waterproof Camera with 3-Inch LCD, Red

This camera is a perennial favorite – at least one person on each trip this year had this camera, as do we (and my dad!). We still think its the best point and shoot out there for adventure – its waterproof, takes great photos and videos and can slip into your pocket.

Make Art!

One of the delights, benefits of going on a sail boat and being in Antarctica for two weeks is the TIME.  The time to soak in the place.  The time to spend on the beach.  The time to spend on the deck looking out at the amazing sunset while anchored.  And some of out guests have taken advantage of this luxury to capture the place in a medium other than digital camera.

Derwent Colored Pencils, Watercolor, Water Color Pencils

For the artists out there – this colored pencil set doubles as water colors. Just use the water “pens” (just fill them up onboard) and the colored pencils become water colors. One passenger brought these onboard this year and made some amazing art work! and they are perfect for travel and minimize mess.

Ohuhu Water Coloring Brush Pens,

Use these water pens to turn the above colored pencils into water colors!  Pretty cool and perfect for travel.

Getting the Perfect Shot?

JJ’s Mittens and Gloves Keeper

Mitten clips – They might be built for kids, but they are super useful in Antarctica. Experience says gloves and mittens are always coming off and on to take a photo, to get something out of a backpack, to take another photo. In fact this year a passenger built her own out of string, as the mittens were off and on so much. So a simple solution is to revert back to childhood and get some of these simple, but do the trick mitten clips!

My Favorite Hat

Carhartt Women’s Gretna Fleece 2 In 1

This hat is the warmest and really keeps out the wind, which can ruin your day on a sailboat. But with this on and the built in ear / neckwarmer, the wind really stays out. Its a big winner onboard!

Coolest Sunglasses

Ray-Ban Unisex Folding Wayfarer

Sunglasses are a MUST in Antarctica – the snow is bright, the water reflection is strong.  These sunglasses are not only good looking, but also fold!  We thought that was pretty cool!  Two of our guests had these this year and we felt they were fun and very convenient.
