Trash and Microplastics

Yet another day of strong winds and snow here on Quijote and we are still hunkered down in Caleta Olla. Yesterday when we walked along the beach that is across the cove from us, we noticed bits of trash scattered along the beach. Its the filter before the Beagle as the prevailing winds from the west push and blow all the rubbish from the cove into this spit of land. The source is likely a mix of the multiple sailboats that stop here as well as the fishing boats that tuck in here at night. In addition to the bits along the beach, there were 2 large white bags full of trash washed up at the end of the beach. We decided before leaving for Puerto Williams we would do a beach / trash walk. Leaving Quijote Fede grabbed one large black trash bag. I said to get one more small bag so people could walk in different areas and then put them together at the end. Fede said its easier just to take 2 large bags and its good we did. We managed to fill both large bags to the top! Its amazing, once your eyes tune in, your eyes start seeing trash everywhere. In addition to the beach itself, there was alot of bags, cardboard, and soda bottles tucked into the shrubs that clung to the spit of land. On the way back we tried to stop at the fishing boat in the cove and tell them we would take their trash if they wanted, but it was already 8 at night and they were asleep, as they leave at 4 in the morning for putting out their king crab traps. Earlier in the afternoon we traded them a box of wine, a box of milk, in addition to some cookies for 6 HUGE king crabs. You can guess what is on the menu tonight… In addition to our trash clean up, we also took 2 more samples for the ASC / MERI microsplastic project. We took samples 4 and 5 here in this cove. I took sample 4 about 2 meters from shore and sample 5 in the middle of the cove. It will be interesting if there are plastics in these samples, as its a popular spot for small boats. Its been blowing 25-30 knots almost constantly for 3 days, so hopefully that’s ok for the samples. Thanks for all the messages wishing us a happy thanksgiving. During the first thanksgiving with the pilgrims there was alot of seafood, so I’m sure our king crab dinner will fit the bill, even though we had our “offical” Thanksgiving 3 days ago. ***You can send FREE text messages to us at http://messaging.iridium.com number: 881631529272
