Nature must be listened to down south and here the winds are blowing in the Drake, so Ocean Tramp and Crew are waiting for a window to head south

To Antarctica… Soon!

Hello families and loved ones of the 03Dec23 expeditions to Antarctica! You all may be following along with our location and wondering why we are not about to touch our toes on Antarctic ice!? Let me tell you all what we have been up to!

On the 3rd of December, we all met at the dock as requested, with our duffels in tow. Once aboard and settled in, we learned that the weather in the south sea and Drake Passage is questionable at best. Thanks to modern technology, we have been able to track a surge of storms and hurricanes that would have made our trip quite sketchy at best. The Ocean Tramp crew has been amazing in communicating conditions as the days go along. While they have been ready to pick up and go as soon as weather permits, they have also planned a few activities for us to do in the meantime. Luckily we were able to escape Ushuaia on the 4th, as the port was soon after shut down to vessels leaving southwardly.

If you are in fact following along and tracking us regularly, you might know we have been posted up in the harbor of Puerto Williams, Chile. To note there has been quite the squabble over the years as to who has the southernmost town between Argentina and Chile. Just a few years ago Chile officially made Puerto Williams a city in attempt to claim the title of “Fin del Mundo” (The end of the Earth); but, the residents of Ushuaia are reluctant to hand over such a distinction. However, we are lucky to have set foot in each location.

Here in Puerto Williams, we have been safe shopping, hiking, and enjoying the beautiful views of the Patagonia Mountains as we wait out the storms. We are eating well and our accommodations and company are cozy.

Tomorrow morning, on the 7th, we believe there will be a perfect break in the weather to scoot down to all the adventure that awaits in Antarctica. For now, we are all safe and having a lovely time aboard Ocean Tramp! I’m sure I can speak for everyone that we love and miss you all and happy to be in the hands of such capable sailors!
