Data Published from Guest Scientists

Guest Scientist Michaël Beaulieu, onboard in the 2018-2019 season and Helen Rößler, onboard in the 2019-2020 season collected extensive data on the vocalization of Gentoo, Adelie, and Chinstrap penguins around the Antarctic peninsula.

Their work has been published in the Journal Ornithology and will be the cover feature of the October 2022 edition. You can read the article HERE. In addition to the comprehensive data analysis, there is a convienent section, “Lay Summary”, that gives a very digestable overview of their conculsions.

While in the field Helen and Michaël made recordings at Gentoo pengiun colonies. Sometimes Gentoos nest alone, and sometimes they were mixed with either Adelies or Chinstraps. They wanted to analyze the frequenies to see if gentoos vocalized differently if they had other types of penguins around – ie if they needed to change their “voice” in order to be heard.

I won’t give away the “ending” – have a look at the paper to see the conclusions – again HERE is the link.
