Introducing Next Season’s Guest Scientists

Each season, in addition to participating in Citizen Science projects such as Happywhale and FjordPhyto, Quixote Expeditions also brings guests scientists on some of its voyages.  Science is a key element of Quixote trips, as one of the founders, Laura Smith, is a geologist and wants her passengers to experience Antarctica through many lenses, including one of active scientific inquiry!

The applicants for the Guest Scientist program become stronger each year.  This year two were selected for the upcoming 2019-2020 season.  On the Ocean Tramp trip departing Dec 1, Helen Rößler will join, continuing research on penguin vocalizations that was started last year onboard Ocean Tramp.  Joining the Ocean Tramp trip departing Jan 29, 2020, is Dr. Megan May, who will look at antibiotic resistant bacteria in the ocean.  Guests will be invited to join in the sample and data collecting during the trips.  On both trips the scientists will give presentations throughout the journey about their Antarctica research and past research that they have done.
