Hans Hansson – Grytviken and Fortuna – Vanessa

It’s a well known fact that gin and tonic tastes better with glacier ice. That was our aperitif last night after a good day at Jason Harbour and Carlita, in Cumberland West Bay. A small cave yielded evidence of a hearth, and a nearby rock shelter had indications of a “floor”.

Our snowy time at Grytviken has given way to sun at Fortuna Bay. We did get to visit the museum and church, and send our post cards (which the Post Office lady told us would arrive well after we get home…..) and we enjoyed an evening with the BAS team at King Edward Point.

In another small cave at Fortuna today, I excavated a rusty tin can and what I interpret to be a sardine can key. But there were also some lovely large square nails and this cave too had a hearth.

Cumberland West Bay was full of little ice bergs and we could hear the air bubbles popping as they moved around. One held a snoozing leopard seal. Some were beautiful shades of blue and some were full of rocks and stones. The one which ended up in our G&T was clear and sparkling.

We only have a few days more, here’s hoping the weather lets us make the most of the time.

  1. I knew that was your post when I saw G&T mentioned! Trip sounds really interesting and you are seeing plenty. We just had a wet and windy week in Devon, but still had a good time. Hope you have lots of photos to show us when you return.

  2. I’m glad G&T tastes better with glacier ice. Can you bring some home in a thermos flask? It is good that you are at Fortuna Bay. I was looking at my photos of there from 10 years ago the other day. There is a lot more snow at Grytviken than we saw in mid February. Do they say “let sleeping leopard seals lie?” in the South Atlantic?
